Jubilee Onyx

On Christmas Eve, the Evjen family headed to Superior, Arizona, to adopt a dog from the animal rescue.

We packed all of Chloe’s snacks, filled up her bottles with milk, grabbed a leash, collar and a dog bone, filled up the car and headed out east.

We found out that the animal rescue in Superior was in desperate need of getting their dogs adopted. We saw their dogs available, and fell in love with one in particular, named “Onyx.” She was a female, less than 2 years old, up to date on shots and spayed. We felt this was the perfect match, as we have been wanting a dog since we’ve been married, but, didn’t want the responsibility of raising a puppy. Waking up in the middle of the night for one crying child was enough for us at the moment. :)

When we arrived at the shelter, we quickly asked for Onyx, knowing we wanted to get to know her. I am glad we already had one in mind, because if we started looking at the other dogs we would have wanted to take them all home.

We took Onyx on a walk and she was so gentle with Chloe, but definitely needed leash training. I was a little apprehensive that she would be hard to train. Matt is really good at training dogs, he shows them so much love, but also is firm when he needs to be. He is a great “Alpha human,” me on the other hand, not so much. Matt said he would teach me. As we were walking back to the shelter, Onyx started getting really anxious. She was no longer calm, but squirmy. She didn’t want to go back. :(

At that moment we decided to take her. She needed a chance to be a good dog, and know a better life.

We signed the papers and took her. We had a Christmas dog!

Onyx did a great job in the car, and Chloe was so happy there was a doggy with her.

We started brainstorming on names, and I choose Jubilee. First, because I love that name and Second, because Matt would never let me name our actual child that. :) It’s from one of my favorite Christian worship songs “Days of Elijah.”

The lyrics go

“These are the days of Elijah, Declaring the word of the Lord…

These are the days of great trials, Of famine and darkness and sword.

Still we are the voice int he desert crying, Prepare ye the way of the Lord!

Behold He comes, riding on the clouds,

Shining like the sun. At the trumpet’s call.

Life your voice, it’s the year of Jubilee, and

Out of Zion’s hill salvation comes.”

It’s one of those songs, that remembers God’s beauty even in the ugliest times. In the end, righteousness will be restored. :) Perfect name for a dog who has been abused, but still has so much love.

We decided to keep her given name by the shelter, and she became Jubilee Onyx Evjen, JOE, Juju or Jubee for short.

When we brought her home, we noticed she had trouble opening up her left eye, and that it was watery.

We cleaned it, hoping it would get better, and that it was from an injury, and would soon heal. Some days it would look better than others, and other days her eye would tear up. We realized it wasn’t healing, so we took her to the vet. That is when we found out that Jubilee has Entropion, that is, her bottom eyelid is turning in, so that the lashes rub against the eye surface, and can eventually cause blindness.

We were really upset that the only way to fix this would be through an expensive surgery that we cannot afford. We are looking into vets that would take payment plans and offer discounts. The vet that we took her to will charge $590.95 for the procedure. We are asking friends and family to help donate with anything they can.

If you know of any vets that are willing to donate their time, in the Phoenix Metro Area, please let us know!

UPDATE – Surgery will happen January 18, 2012

Enough money has been raised to do Jubee’s Eye Surgery, thank you ALL who supported her.
